Chapter XI Porcelain of Qing Dynasty
Now we come to the Qing Dynasty, which began in 1644 and ended in 1911. Porcelain production came to its zenith in the Kangxi and Yongzheng Periods in the Qing.

Section I   Porcelain of Shunzhi Period

Jingdezhen was seriously damaged in the chaos and war at the end of Ming, so the production there was off and on in early Qing, as a resutl we rarely see any product made in Shunzhi period by the official kiln; yet the production at civilian kilns resumed very quickly to cater to the need of export. Blue and white at this period used domestic colorant and there were four kinds of its color: pale blue, dark blue, proper blue and bluish green. The inner body was thick and heavy, and its unique pattern was a dragon and clouds that covered up some parts of the dragon. There were also two types of above glaze five colors: coarse and refined.

Emperor Kangxi ruled for 61 years from 1662 to 1722. By allowing import of colorants, the development of painted patterns was made possible. The 19th year of reign of Kangxi saw the resumption of the production at Jingdezhen, and supervisors over porcelain production were appointed by the emperor, and some kilns were named after these supervisors, such as the “Zang Kiln” and “Lang Kiln”. The inner body was fine and hard and the glaze was right next to the paste. There were efforts to immitate products of the previous periods.
